Justice For All Neighbors: Immigration and Asylum Seekers

Here at Neighborhood Church, we believe that being constant seekers of justice is a core tenet of Christian community. We highlight different justice focuses throughout the year while also collaborating and supporting many incredible community partners working for justice in the city of Atlanta and beyond!

At Neighborhood Church, we are committed to engaging with critical social issues through the lens of faith, and we believe in justice for ALL our neighbors. In the upcoming months, we are shifting our focus to a deeply pressing concern: the challenges faced by immigrants and asylum seekers. As part of the United Methodist Church, we ground our actions in the UMC Social Principles, which call us to welcome the stranger, defend the rights of the marginalized, and stand in solidarity with those fleeing persecution and violence.

The plight of immigrants and asylum seekers is not just a political issue; it is a profound humanitarian and moral crisis. Families and individuals escaping violence, poverty, and political instability are often met with fear, hostility, and systemic barriers upon arrival in the U.S. Our faith compels us to respond with compassion, justice, and concrete action. This initiative will dedicate our collective efforts to understanding, advocating for, and supporting immigrants and asylum seekers, helping them navigate complex legal systems, and finding safety in our communities.

Our Comprehensive Plan:

1) Educational Workshops and Discussions

Join Us for the Screening of "Unseen" – A Story of Resilience and Advocacy
Neighborhood Church ATL and the Georgia Advocacy Office invite you to a special screening of the documentary "Unseen" on November 12, 2024, at 5:30 PM. This powerful film follows the journey of Pedro, a blind, undocumented student navigating the complexities of his world with courage and determination.
Event Details:

  • Date: Tuesday, November 12, 2024

  • Time: 5:30 PM (Opening Reception)

  • Location: Neighborhood Church ATL, 1561 McLendon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30307

The evening will begin with an opening reception, followed by the documentary screening and a panel discussion featuring advocates and experts on disability justice, immigration, and educational access. The panel will explore the challenges Pedro faces and discuss ways we can work together to support undocumented individuals with disabilities in our communities.
This event is not only an opportunity to watch a remarkable story but also to engage in meaningful dialogue and action around critical social justice issues.

2) Community Outreach and Advocacy

Atlanta's Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage Walks

Join the Atlanta Multifaith Coalition for Palestine for Atlanta’s Gaza Ceasefire Peace Pilgrimage, a family friendly event led by local faith leaders. The road to justice is still long ahead of us. Knowing this, save the dates for fall pilgrimages, on the first Saturday of the month. Each will be a 2.7 mile loop starting and ending at Old Water Tower Park starting at 9 am.

3) Resource Distribution

We are committed to providing tangible support to immigrants and asylum seekers in our community. Through our Solidarity Fund, we will support the work of organizations in the greater Atlanta area who are boots on the ground helping to meet the critical needs such as legal representation, housing, and access to essential resources.

We invite you to join us in this mission by giving to the Solidarity Fund today. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of those seeking safety and a fresh start.
